Would it look cheap to get a free website for a small business?

It would look like www.webstarts.com/mybusinessname

My business would basically be more word of mouth and I do not want to invest alot of money into it with websites, domain names, unless it actually becomes more successful but at least I would have a webpage out there....any thoughts??

get at least domain name. it only cost you somewhere USD10. if you only rely mouth to mouth then it is not online biz and believe me you will stop this business within a year. the only way to build up long term business online is having your own site with your own domain name that target for search engine traffic. i have build my site with subdomain with free host. if i have a paid domain name and use this free hosting plan nobody knows that my site is hosted with free host. but since i have promote my site to a lot of places and has some good link i would lost all that if get my own domain name. i promote free host because online biz is not easy. paying monthly for hosting while starting up is not a wise move. but domain name is important. you can point this name to any hosting plan. all the link are attached to this domain name. so please buy domain name. and use free hosting services with my site%26#039;s free host. i recommend them highly because they are so much better than other free host. they have good forum too. but you need to remember free services has limitation so don%26#039;t expect too much. go to my profile if you need to take a look at my site. hope that helps.

Free websites usually put advertising on your page that you have no control over. The ad could be for a competitor or just embarrassing. Most Internet service providers provide web space with your internet access. Contact your provider and ask or check their website.

Other Replys:probably wouldnt be the greatest idea, but then i guess if you dont have enough cash to invest in it, or your not selling much then i guess the free ones better than none as you said
