Nothing is really free. They tend to charge with ads. And because of that they tend to be different for each game. In other words, someone might host your WoW world for free because they have a bunch of WoW ads. So it depends on what game you have.
I just run my own. An old computer that would be in the closet because it wont run the latest greatest windows games makes a great server. Load free linux on it. Mine hosts 2 online worlds, hundreds of email addresses for me and my friends, and dozens of domains.
